Where will you find me, When all is said and done? You weren’t the only one The best of all my promises Strung up along The breast of your despair Given holy bread to eat The waters over there When all the words are spoken When all the deeds are done Will you comfort me, When the last days come? The things you lined up In shaking rows and rows Toys and bitter gifts of youth In boxes now they float The garden’s full of you You’re etched into the roots The clouds will know your name And the grass is with you too When all the words are spoken And all the deeds are done Will you comfort me my friend, When the last days come? Emily 04:11
Leaning on the porch looking at the sky Of fire and brimstone from places she'd never seen She knew little love at her father’s drunken hand Poor mother was tired from working the land From the field one burning harvest day Came a shout for whiskey in the old familiar way “Child he's mad stay clear of him today” If a mother’s eyes could speak, this is what they’d say Oh run Emily run; keep your dreams alive, run from this life She watched mother cross the cornfield row by row And disappear into the shadow of the old scarecrow Fathers belt bit deeper blow by blow And the corn turned red and the sun dipped low Emily never left her mothers side She nursed her knowing no doctor would arrive All the while keeping out of fathers sight And holding back the tears she could only cry at night Run Emily run; while there’s still time, run from this life Two weeks past and mother finally died Father told his story to the townsfolk who came by “She fell under the reaper at the end of July ”They just shook their heads and chose to share the lie Father yelled as the bleeding sun went down “Bring my whisky girl you're the woman now ”She stepped from the porch with his gun held in her hands As the shot rang out he fell and the crows began to land Run Emily run; far from this life, run for your life Copyright Rob Finlay 2016

Eve 03:39
Do you know if it’s over for us? And who stole our keys to the cites of gold From rib and dust came holy light Forbidden fruit and serpent night Eve please tell me a story Why is it that left and right aren’t up and down? You convinced them he was real Everything standing still as stone The palest priests pray on the weak ones Their sweet hands spinning yarns And lead their fleeced flocks to drowning Given the chance they’d eat them alive Eve please tell me a story Why is it that left and right aren’t up and down? You convinced them he was real Everything standing still as stone Since the end of time I’ve been waiting Staring silently into the face of God But God never shifted or rolled before me The span of all time and space, that’s true glory Eve please tell me a story Why is it that left and right aren’t up and down? You convinced them he was real You convinced them all we were too We were too Copyright Rob Finlay 2016

I saw a girl lead a blind man by the hand In Florida on her way to Disney Land The man’s face was curled like darkness in a ball And this is the story as far as I recall The girl was born no more than 7 years before An English rose with her petals barely formed From her mother came an inner strength and pride That this little girl wore with every stride, she said Hold my hand, and close your eyes I’ll lead the way oh I will be your guide Through the darkness of the night we will find Each others love and the meaning of the light I saw a girl lead a blind man by the hand In Florida on my way to Dixie Land Her mum and dad made love in a field of golden rye Nine months passed and in childbirth the mother died Dad held baby against a moon silver sky Knowing he’d never see a look from those riven blue eyes, he said Hold my hand, and close your eyes I’ll lead the way oh I will be your guide Through the darkness of the night we will find Each others love and the meaning of the light I saw a girl lead a blind man by the hand In Florida on her way to Disney Land She watched me run my fingers on the board Down the frets of this old worn guitar Then she suddenly stopped and raised an arm She gave me thumbs up and a smile that broke my heart, I sang Hold my hand, and close your eyes I’ll lead the way oh I will be your guide Through the darkness of the night we will find Each others love and the meaning of the light Copyright Rob Finlay 2016

Joan 03:02
Some spark of life drew me in It led me here like seas on fire Visions clear, heaven n earth What’s a soul in two worlds worth? I wield a sword of fire and love I fight for the king of France and God I'm no saint and I'm no sinner As your holy flames climb high I see your souls run thinner The word of God guides my hand They cry heresy across the land Is it in Gods grace I lie? I fear to speak the answer If not may he put me there If I am? May he so keep me I'm no saint and I'm no sinner As your holy flames climb high I see your souls run thinner Crowds cheer as the pyre licks higher Silver wheel of burning fire The lion breath of God is near Joan roars into my dying ear Receive your child from within Pull an angel, from this burning skin Copyright Rob Finlay 2016

about

Review from Tim Carroll FolkWords.com

There must be little more devastating for a musician than hearing loss. That’s the experience of singer songwriter Rob Finlay. The title of his latest EP, ‘Half Heard’ makes a blackly humorous and somewhat wry stab at the fact that he has lost the hearing in his right ear. Disability aside, ‘Half Heard’ although clearly inspired in part by his condition, is no maudlin wallow in pity. ‘Half Heard’ is a short but impressive collection of sensitive, engrossing narrative songs that look at the human condition ... reflections of love, experiences of pain, loss and finding.

He possesses the finely judged delivery of the troubadour, which with voice and guitar allows Finlay to deliver powerful messages for his audience ... it’s easy to ‘live’ within his songs and experience the intense lyrics as they touch you. There’s an eclectic mix to this album, acoustic folk clearly born from these islands laced with an Americana tinge, there’s also those storylines that pull the listener into the tales. The inward look of ‘All the Words’ is followed by the harrowing ‘Emily’ ... a tale of abuse, murder and retribution ... there’s the tender narrative of ‘Close Your Eyes’ before Finlay powerfully relates the story of a tragic heroine through ‘Joan’.

Rob states that playing live and rehearsing confront him with difficulties, that's hardly surprising, however ‘Half Heard’ reflects a man sometimes confined by his hearing loss not defined by it. As with every EP that hits the spot, this one leaves you wanting more.
